Community - Definitely Out There

I absolutely adore this show, It's fresh, current, happy to laugh at itself and most importantly freakin' hilarious!
NBC recently announced that the season 3 finale of community will air on Thursday, May 17th, with not one, not two but three episodes. Unfortunately, this announcement has sparked concern that the end is near, and there will be no season 4.
I have been thinking, after watching the last 5-6 episodes that maybe the producers of Community expect not to be renewed. These episodes, particularly the post hiatus ones seem to be really out of the box as far as sitcoms are concerned. With a vendetta against Subway, an epic war of pillows and blankets, a Law and Order Spoof and an entire episode taking place in the dreamatorium, I can't help but feel that this show has become inaccessible to new viewers.
I have loved these episodes, and believe that the second half of season 3 has been one of the strongest yet, but I have watched this show from the beginning, learned to love these characters as they have grown, and even I find myself struggling to keep up sometimes.
Imagining what watching this show is like for people that do not feel intimately connected to these characters and I can see that quite a lot of people just won't get it. I watched "Virtual Systems Analysis" with a friend who hadn't seen much of Community, and she just didn't understand the point of it, she thought it was silly.
Yes, It is silly, and that's the beauty of it. This is a show that is truly about the chemistry between the characters. They all have their individual flaws that just about everyone can relate to, and fans of the show really do feel part of the group.
My point is that the creators and producers of this fine show have been taking risks and pushing the boundary of the sitcom world. Doing this, they have built an extremely devoted fan base that would do almost anything to save their show. The problem is, is that in doing this, they seem to have alienated new viewers. Do I wish they had played it safe? I dunno. I think if they had the show would have a much stronger chance for renewal, but would it still be the same show that I love?
Six seasons and a movie!!
